One of the most stylish heartthrobs of hip-hop, Playboi Carti is popular for his whimsical style. Carti is so much into fashion that he had one of the craziest style evolutions out of any rapper. We appreciate him a lot and we are excited to share his style journey with you.
So, with no further ado, let’s get into it.
The Style Evolution of Playboi Carti
Phase 1 (2011-12) –
Starting with the very beginning of Playboi Carti’s style evolution, when Carti wasn’t even Carti yet.
In 2011, he was calling himself $ir Cartier, and even though he wasn’t popping off yet and he was not all into style, but still we got a glimpse of Playboi Carti’s fashion in the music videos of his songs like $teez and Cry.
So, back then, style and fashion weren’t his primary focus and he would mostly just rock graphic t-shirts.
Well, we can’t criticize him because he was only about 16 years old and this was way before he started earning money.
Although, it looks like Odd Future influenced his style.
Odd Future was a rap crew featuring Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt & Frank Ocean.
when Odd Future became massive in popularity around 2010-11, it created a trend of youngsters dressing like them.
They embraced tie-dye, bright hues, snapbacks, and look-at-me graphics.
However, Playboi Carti didn’t take it as far as others, but in many ways during this phase, Playboi Carti was dressed like Tyler, the Creator.
This stage in Playboi Carti’s style evolution wouldn’t last long… But yes, it was the very first time Playboi Carti began to take his dressing seriously.
Phase 2 (2013-14) –
During this phase, Playboi Carti’s style didn’t evolve drastically but we can see that he’s starting to think about it a bit more seriously than his previous stage.
He was very underground, but he started to gain a bit of traction in Atlanta’s hip hop scene.
He was starting to take his fashion a bit more seriously in his music video for Pray 4 Me, which came out in 2014.
Here, Playboi Carti can be seen rocking a baggy Tommy Hilfiger shirt, skinny denim jeans, and white Nike sneakers.
Nothing too crazy here because it’s not like he’s wearing very designer head-to-toe outfits, but it’s a growth from 2011 to 12.
It was working for him well… in a recent interview with Kid Cudi, Playboi Carti says that he was elected best dressed in his high school.
It was also around this phase when he started leaning into streetwear.
And the craziest fact is that it was his interest in streetwear fashion that would change his life forever.
Like most young guys, Carti got into Supreme at that time and he started posting some of his outfits on social media.
Although Playboi Carti was still more focused on his music than on dressing but then something just happened and Ian Connor saw a post of Playboi Carti pulling off some rare Supreme clothing and he reached out to praise him for his style.
Both the fashionistas instantly connected over their common interest in streetwear fashion and both being from Atlanta.
Then they started chilling and eventually became buddies.
Phase 3 (2015-16) –
Okay, so 2015 is the year that Playboi Carti starts taking over SoundCloud.
At that time, Playboi Carti’s song Fetti featuring Da$H and Maxo Kream was creating the real buzz for him.
Well, the humorous thing is when Ian Connor and Carti first met, Ian wasn’t even aware that Carti was making music, or at least, he didn’t listen to his music.
Ian Connor would later recognize that Playboi Carti used to send him links to his tracks but that he didn’t actually listen that was until one day Ian’s assistant playing some song, Ian just heard that and asked who it was, just to find out.
Well, it was our style beast – Playboi Carti.
After this point, Ian Connor began sharing Carti’s music and promoting it on social media. Ian also introduced Playboi Carti to the A$AP Mob.
This was a big turning point for Carti’s career but also for his style… We’ll talk about it in just a bit.
This whole thing would lead to Playboi Carti becoming one of the most significant faces of A$AP Bari’s fashion label Vlone.
Well, think about it. If Playboi Carti had never rocked that piece of Supreme, he perhaps would have never met Ian Connor and if Carti had never met Ian, he probably would have never been introduced to the A$AP Mob.
Looking back now, it’s kind of crazy to even think that this all just happened because of his big interest in fashion and streetwear.
Although Playboi Carti was already making a path of his own, from this point forward, Playboi Carti’s dressing sense became a prominent part of his personality.
2016 was the year that Playboi Carti hit bestride his style. It was also the year that Carti broke into mainstream popularity.
During this time, Supreme was more established than it ever had been.
So, a lot of Playboi Carti’s outfits started going viral on social media, which eventually gave him a rise in popularity.
Playboi Carti not only earned a lot of new fans but they were all fashion-minded and this meant that they were all now paying attention to what Carti was wearing.
Let’s take a glimpse of the best Playboi Carti outfits:
Here, Carti is wearing a pink Supreme box logo, The Supreme Mark Gonzalez collaboration pants, and a pair of AIR Jordan 1.
Note that AIR Jordan 1 would become another staple in many Playboi Carti outfits.
Here, we’ve him in a picture taken by Gunner Stahl.
Carti wearing the OG Supreme and Louis Vuitton box logo.
Okay… it’s not just about him wearing the luxurious or most expensive pieces in these photographs, he also styles himself flawlessly.
Playboi Carti’s dressing sense is all about the right proportions, fit and color selection.
Overall, a really incredible understanding of self-styling by nicely aligning himself with a well-known brand like Supreme.
Alright, we’ve talked a lot about Playboi Carti’s Supreme phase but we can’t dive into the next phase of the style evolution of Playboi Carti without quoting Vlone.
As we have already mentioned, Vlone is a streetwear fashion brand created by A$AP Bari (one of the founding members of the A$AP Mob).
When Playboi Carti started kicking around with A$AP Mob, he also started rocking Vlone pieces and over time, Carti wore Vlone so much that he became closely linked with this brand.
He wore Vlone in the music video for his song What with UnoTheActivist.
Even Carti modeled for some Vlone campaigns.
So, with a great circle of Vlone, Supreme, and AIR Jordan 1, Playboi Carti had become everyone’s favorite in the streetwear world by the end of this phase.
Phase 4 (2017-18) –
In 2017, Playboi Carti was chosen as an XXL freshman and he also released his Self-titled debut mixtape this year.
Now, he had more eyes on him than ever before. So, Carti stepped things up a bit.
Playboi Carti had shown lights of interest in designer fits before, but in 2017, he went all in.
Let’s start with his GQ photoshoot.
Well, he worked with some of the best stylists for this photoshoot but still; we saw a side of Carti that we had never discovered before.
Here, Playboi Carti is wearing Celine sunglasses with a Louis Vuitton shirt.
Some other standouts from this phase include when he rocked Raf Simons for a photoshoot that was with Gucci Mane and when he wore the I Love NY sweater from Raf Simons at the 2017 BET hip-hop awards.
Now, It understandable that Playboi Carti is a huge lover of the brand Raf Simons.
Also, Playboi Carti and A$AP Rocky released a song called RAF featuring Frank Ocean, Lil Uzi Vert, and Quavo.
Although Playboi Carti was still wearing a lot of streetwear outfits, including Supreme, he was now putting up with much more of an interest in high fashion… This was just the beginning of it.
In 2018, Virgil Abloh presented his debut collection for brand Louis Vuitton.
This collection was highly awaited, to begin with, and everyone in the style community was there to witness Playboi Carti.
He was modeling a silver poncho, brick road pants, and prism monogram bag.
This was one of the most incredible looks from the whole collection.
Although Playboi Carti was popular for his streetwear style… through this appearance, Carti established his name in the high fashion industry.
A few months later, Playboi Carti would model for Virgil Abloh again in Off-white’s fall 2019 show and we all noticed something unusual here.
Yes, this was the beginning of the blonde Playboi Carti era.
Also, in 2018, Carti released his debut album Die Lit and we can see him rocking AIR Jordan 1 on the cover of this album.
That said, Playboi Carti was still into streetwear-inspired dressing, but everything was about to shift because we were about to enter the Whole Lotta Red era Playboi Carti.
Phase 5 (2019-20) –
Started giving hints after hints about his sophomore album Whole Lotta Red in October 2019.
But along with it, Playboi Carti debuted a whole fresh aesthetic.
From this point forward, we mostly saw him wearing Raf Simons, Helix, and Rick Owens.
Now, the thing is Carti had worn these brands even before, but it would usually be a piece or two blended with streetwear.
But this time, he was putting together complete fits and going all-in on the shady vibe high fashion aesthetic…
Playboi Carti even started wearing horns and fangs in his photoshoots that prove that Carti was no longer into just styling to look good. He began to use fashion as a tool to curate his persona.
That’s something that a lot of popular artists do.
Kanye West, Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Tyler, the Creator. These are some artists who change their dressing style when reaching a new phase in their careers.
For Playboi Carti, going all into this shady punk rock fashion was the best way for him to transition into more dark punk rock type music.
So, Playboi Carti colored his hair red to give a hint to his fans that his album Whole Lotta Red was on the way.
About a month before Whole Lotta Red dropped, Playboi Carti did a photoshoot with GQ. In which we can see him wearing many brands, including Rick Owens, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, and Raf Simons.
These photos provoked the meme about Playboi Carti being a vampire.
Well, to be fair, Carti was pushing the Playboi Carti vampire look on 11 December 2020.
So, Playboi Carti’s Whole Lotta Red finally came out on 25th December 2020 and even though we’re talking about his style, let me know what you thought and what are your favorite songs from this album.
Alright, we’ve gone through just about every phase in Playboi Carti’s style evolution.
